How to wash and clean your flag so it looks great for a long time

Flags and beach flags are constantly exposed to the weather, dust and all kinds of dirt. Whether you use them in front of a shop, at an event or on the facade of a building, sooner or later they will need cleaning. The good news is that with the right care, you can keep their vivid colors and great look for a long time.

We'll show you how to wash, dry, iron and store products made from PrintONE's 110 g/m² polyester flag fabric.

Why is regular flag cleaning important?

PrintONE's flags and beach flags are made from 110 g/m² knitted polyester fabric. This lightweight yet durable textile is ideal for outdoor use, as it withstands everyday wear and moves beautifully in the wind.

Thanks to the printing technology, the graphics have vivid colors, and on single-sided flags the design is also visible on the reverse side of the fabric, as a mirror image.

During outdoor use, however, dust, pollen, exhaust fumes and other environmental pollutants can gradually build up on the surface of the flag. These can not only spoil the flag's appearance, but in the long run can also affect the condition of the fabric.

Regular, gentle cleaning helps preserve the colors of your flag and extend its lifespan.

How do you wash a polyester flag?

Fortunately, cleaning polyester flags isn't complicated, but there are a few basic rules you should follow.

1. Wash at a low temperature

You can usually clean 110 g/m² polyester flags by hand or in the washing machine. For machine washing, choose a gentle cycle, preferably at 30 °C, and avoid a strong spin.

High temperatures and intense mechanical stress can damage the fabric, so it's not worth using a heavy-duty wash program.

2. Use a gentle detergent!

Choose a mild detergent, preferably liquid, for cleaning. Avoid chlorine bleaches, aggressive stain removers and solvents.

These substances can damage the textile fibers and negatively affect the look of the print.

3. Treat stubborn stains separately!

If mud, dust or other dirt appears on the flag, try to remove it as soon as possible.

Gently clean the stained area with lukewarm water and a little mild detergent. Don't use a rough brush and don't rub the fabric hard, as you could damage the structure of the textile.

4. How often should you wash it?

This mainly depends on where and under what conditions you use the flag.

  • For indoor use: occasional cleaning is usually enough, when it becomes visibly dirty.

  • For outdoor use: it's worth checking it monthly and washing it as needed.

  • Next to busy roads: because of exhaust fumes and dust, you may need to clean it even more often.

  • After events: if the flag has become dusty, muddy or wet, always clean and dry it before storing it.

You don't necessarily have to wash your flag every month, but regular checks help prevent stubborn dirt from setting in.

How do you dry your flag?

One advantage of polyester is that it dries relatively quickly.

After washing, spread out or hang up the flag so that air can flow freely around it. It's best to let it dry in a shady, well-ventilated place.

What to avoid:

  • Don't use a high-temperature tumble dryer program.

  • Don't place it directly on a radiator or other strong heat source.

  • Don't wring the fabric out hard.

  • Don't fold it up or put it away wet.

Unpleasant odors, discoloration and mold can develop on damp, folded fabric.

Can you iron flags?

Yes, polyester flags can be ironed carefully if necessary, but pay particular attention to the temperature!

Set the iron to a low setting recommended for synthetic fabrics. It's a good idea to place a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the flag so that the hot soleplate doesn't touch the fabric directly.

If you're unsure, try ironing on a less visible area first.

Too high a temperature can deform the polyester fibers and, in extreme cases, even melt them.

Washing isn't everything: how to extend the life of your flag

In addition to regular cleaning, how you use the flag also matters a lot.

Watch out for the wind!

By nature, flags are constantly moving in the wind. However, this movement also wears down the fabric, especially at the edges and along the seams.

In strong winds it's worth taking the flag down, and in stormy weather you should definitely put it in a safe place.

With beach flags, using the right base and fixing is especially important. Always choose the base to suit the surface and the expected wind load.

Don't let it touch anything!

Position the flag so that it can move freely. If it keeps slapping against a wall, fence, pole or other object, the fabric can wear out prematurely or tear.

Proper placement is therefore at least as important as cleaning itself.

Store it properly!

If you won't be using the flag for a longer period, put it away clean and completely dry.

Store it loosely folded, in a dry place protected from direct sunlight. It's a good idea to separate the fabric of a beach flag from the pole structure and put it in the carry bag that comes with it.

What should you watch out for when cleaning beach flags?

Cleaning beach flags – also known as beach flags – is basically the same as for traditional polyester flags. However, there are a few additional things you should take into account.

Before washing, always remove the fabric from the pole structure. Check the pole sleeves, seams and fixing points, as these areas are subject to increased stress.

If you regularly set up and take down your beach flag at events, also make sure the fabric doesn't touch the ground during assembly.

A clean, well-maintained beach flag not only lasts longer, but also gives a more professional impression of your business.

In short: a few simple rules to keep your flag looking great for a long time

PrintONE's 110 g/m² polyester flag fabric is lightweight, easy to handle and, with proper care, can be used for a long time.

The most important things are to wash it gently, avoid harsh chemicals and high temperatures, and always store it completely dry. For outdoor use, pay attention to wind conditions and make sure the fabric doesn't constantly come into contact with other surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

Can a polyester flag be washed in a washing machine?

Yes, properly made polyester flags can usually be cleaned in a washing machine too. Choose a gentle cycle, a low temperature and a mild detergent. Always follow the care instructions of the specific product.

At what temperature should you wash a flag?

A gentle wash at 30 °C is a good starting point for cleaning polyester flags. Only use a higher temperature if the product's care instructions expressly allow it.

Is it okay to iron a printed flag?

Yes, at a low temperature, with a setting suitable for synthetic fabric and preferably using a protective cloth. Too high a temperature can damage the fabric.

Why does the edge of a flag fray?

The most common cause of fraying is the constant mechanical stress caused by the wind. It can appear especially quickly if the flag slaps against a wall, pole or other object. Using it in strong winds can also speed up wear.
